AI-powered Vehicles: The Growing Demand for High-Reliability PCBs in Automotive Electronics
With the increasing integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology into the automotive sector, features such as autonomous driving, intelligent cockpits, and in-car Ethernet are transitioning from concepts to mass production. This development is significantly raising the complexity and integration of automotive electronics. In turn, it is pushing printed circuit board (PCB) products to evolve towards high-density interconnect (HDI) and multilayer designs, placing greater demands on their reliability, thermal management, and electrical performance.
High Standards for Automotive PCBs
Modern smart vehicles are equipped with numerous sensors, radar systems, cameras, and high-speed communication modules, which require extremely high real-time data processing and energy management stability. In this context, traditional two-layer boards or low-tier multilayer boards can no longer meet the system’s operational requirements. The need for high-frequency, high-speed signal transmission, multi-power coupling, and the ability to operate in high thermal load environments means that automotive PCBs must not only feature precise routing and high wiring density but also be able to withstand harsh thermal shocks and long-term vibrations.
For instance, 77 GHz millimeter-wave radar operates under stringent conditions, requiring high-performance PCB materials that meet strict electrical characteristics and signal integrity standards. Additionally, intelligent cockpit systems relying on SoC (System on Chip) integration and high-speed DRAM depend on multilayer boards capable of multi-signal isolation and reliable high-frequency transmission.
Material Selection: The Balancing Act of High-Frequency, High-Heat, and High-Reliability
Selecting the right materials is key to the design of HDI and multilayer PCBs. High-performance resin-based materials such as LCP (liquid crystal polymer), PPE (polyphenylene ether), and PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) are becoming increasingly popular due to their excellent dielectric constant control, thermal expansion stability, and low moisture absorption. These materials are gradually replacing traditional FR-4 in higher-tier automotive applications.
Moreover, to achieve thinner and higher-layer stack designs, the compatibility of copper foil and prepregs, as well as their response to thermal stress, must be carefully validated. However, high-performance materials often come with a higher cost, creating a challenge for automotive PCBmanufacturers in balancing performance and cost.
Automotive Certification: A Multi-Layered Challenge from Materials to Systems
In addition to the performance of the materials themselves, meeting automotive reliability certification standards is crucial for PCBs to be used in vehicle applications. AEC-Q series standards, such as AEC-Q200, prescribe strict lifespan, thermal cycling, vibration, and environmental testing processes for various components. Not only do chips and components need to meet these standards, but the PCBs themselves must also comply with automotive- grade board certification standards like IPC-6012DA. Some vehicle manufacturers even impose stricter internal standards, requiring in-depth collaboration between suppliers during the DFM (Design for Manufacturability) and DFT (Design for Testability) stages.
Building a Global Supply System: Stability, Flexibility, and Compliance
In the face of uneven production capacity distribution, geopolitical tensions, and fluctuations in transportation costs, building a flexible and reliable global supply network has become key for PCB manufacturers to ensure stable deliveries. In addition to the traditional self-built capacity models, close collaboration between suppliers, solution providers, and logistics companies is
crucial. Mechanisms such as VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory) and JIT (Just-In-Time) production can optimize inventory and accelerate response times, ensuring timely deliveries and increasing flexibility.
